They opened the gates and the people came! For the first time in nine months, an attendance was allowed at a National League South game with a limit of 700 and no visiting supporters. Strangely, it was as much a surreal moment as those long days of behind closed doors. St Albans, who went top following their victory, would have expected to host over a 1,000 in a normal set of circumstances but 700 is a very good starting point.
On the whole their protocols seemed good; the normal testing procedures that those of us lucky enough to have been able to attend games have become used to, were in place. There was heightened security and stewarding, with one female security making her presence felt in no uncertain terms!
The allowance of people to migrate from one end to the other at half-time though has to be questionable. The end that the home side were attacking in the first half is significantly larger than the other and in the second half, social distancing looked impossible in a more confined area.
But, despite the fact that the roar of the crowd and the celebration of goals and victory went the way of not the club I was supporting, it was great to hear and a first step to normality was taken without too many apparent concerns.
We, at Tonbridge Angels, must wait longer. Tier 3 it would appear is going to be with us into the New Year and all we can do is prepare and learn from the experiences of others in the meantime.
Tonbridge have enjoyed some, almost unbelievable, results on their travels this season with wins at Billericay, Chelmsford and Ebbsfleet that would have been the delight of their supporters had they been able to attend and it seemed another one might be added to the list when, after six minutes, a Ben Greenhalgh cross was tucked away at the far post by Joe Turner.
It was a good 15 minutes for the visitors, matching their high flying hosts and creating chances on the break but, after 17 minutes, a strange decision from the referee allowing a uncontested drop ball on the edge of the box following an injury to James Folkes which culminated into a cross a cross that was headed home by Mitchell Weiss.
Tonbridge were forced to onto the back foot and were grateful to goalkeeper Jonny Henly who made a string of fine saves to keep his side on level terms at the break.
An early penalty shout for Tonbridge as Tommy Wood went down was waved away but St Albans maintained their momentum with Henly needing to continue at his best.
The home side finally got their noses in front after 70 minutes when a free kick from the right side of the box was turned into his own goal by Sonny Miles under pressure.
A ball in behind the Angels defence allowed Shaun Jeffers a free run into the box from where he was upended by Rian Bray for the award of a penalty which he converted himself.
So the fans came, and as they all supported the same team, they all went home happy. Sadly, the Covid cases continue to rise in Kent so the day when Longmead throws open its gates appears to be a while away.

Two goals from Cameron Wootton was enough for our Academy to take the points from a rather laboured performance against a resolute VCD Athletic.
Tommy Parkinson commented after the game that a lack of game time as a team, due to the FA Youth Cup run, and no game for three weeks had led to fitness levels falling away in the second half. Unfortunately, this situation is about to get worse as the league goes into suspension during the lockdown.
Tonbridge started brightly and, after 14 minutes, Ned Lewis and Wootton combined well to set up an opportunity for Louis Copeland, but the winger got the ball stuck under his feet and the chance disappeared.
A minute later the visiting goalkeeper was brought into action making a fine low save from a shot from skipper Ben Twist.
The opening goal, on 18 minutes, was crafted down the right hand side by Chester Smith and Copeland, whose cross was bundled home at the near post by Wootton.
The Angels continued to dominate and Wootton and Luca Woodhouse, with a 20 yard shot, were again denied by good goalkeeping.
VCD were finding it hard to break down the Angels defence, mustering just a single shot on goal in the first period.
Copeland was forced out of the game with a calf injury being replaced at half-time by Billy Kent.
Territorially the second period started in a similar vein with the goalkeeper making an early save to thwart Lewis but VCD were beginning to show some threat on the counter attack and from a Tonbridge corner, a clearance found three players bearing down on Smith, who kept his cool and successfully robbed the VCD man of the ball before he could release one of his accompanying attackers.
After 67 minutes, Charlie Martin was called into his first serious action, advancing and saving with his feet from another breakaway.
Chester Smith, deservedly named man of the match, produced a defence splitting pass with 10 minutes to go for Wootton to run clear and plant a well struck shot that gave the goalkeeper no chance.
In an effort to salvage something from the game deep into injury time, VCD’s goalkeeper came forward for a corner and was very nearly rewarded when his header was brilliantly saved by Martin and cleared to safety.
Parkinson was pleased with the clean sheet and thought that the defensive unit was superb with first year students Smith and Joe Tyrie outstanding.

Tonbridge Angels bowed out of this season’s FA Youth Cup at Princes Park as a strong Dartford side ran out 4-1 winners.
The game could not have started better for the Angels, going in front after just two minutes when Aiden Murphy converted after some fine work down the left by Akolwole Salami.
Tommy Parkinson’s side contained seven first year students and when Cameron Wootton took a heavy knock after 13 minutes, 15-year-old Finley Hartley was his replacement. Losing Wootton was a blow as he has a physical presence that might have given Dartford’s towering central defensive partnership something to think about.
Salami brought a good save out of the home goalkeeper as Tonbridge continued their bright opening.
But the home side was beginning to exert themselves on the game forcing a succession of corners that with their home side’s height was to cause obvious problems. But the Angels’ goalkeeper, Charlie Martin, was rising to the occasion with a series of punched clearances.
After 32 minutes, Martin made a brilliant save, clawing a shot out of the top corner.
As the time ticked down on the first period and Dartford’s corner count mounting, the Angels finally succumbed when a free kick slipped from Martin’s grasp for Sergeant to stab home.
Martin was back in action before the break with a wonderful low save to preserve parity at the half time whistle.
Both Angels full backs, Chester Smith and Will Amiss had stuck manfully to their task as both Dartford wingers were full of tricks and step overs. But, after 51 minutes, a drive forward and cross from the right enabled Watson a close range tap in to give the Darts the lead.
The Angels were further depleted when influential midfielder Luca Woodhouse limped out of the game four minutes later.
After 64 minutes Dartford scored a goal that could grace the Premier League when Davey met a clearance on the volley from 25 yards, the shot whistling into the bottom corner giving Martin no chance.
Despite conceding a fourth goal five minutes from time through Shepherd the substantial Tonbridge contingent in a crowd of 357 could be rightly proud of their efforts both in this game and in the previous rounds. As was Tommy Parkinson, despite having to concede defeat to his first team mate, Ben Greenhalgh.
Tommy said after the match that his team had been beaten by the better team but his young team will learn from the experience and come back stronger in next year’s competition.

Tonbridge Angels came from behind at the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium to seal a place in the final qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup where they will visit Dartford, thus setting up an intriguing battle of minds between Tommy Parkinson and Ben Greenhalgh!
After being on the back foot for the first half, the Angels youngsters came out positively in the second half and one of the half-time substitutions, 15-year-old Fin Hartley, scored the winner with nine minutes remaining.
Whyteleafe, a physically strong and talented side, dominated the first period and would have gone into the break more than a goal to the good had it not been for solid central defensive partnership of Alfie Leach and Joe Tyrie, who were immense throughout. When the visitors found a way through, goalkeeper Charlie Martin came to the rescue with a couple of fine saves.
Tonbridge struggled to make any impression in the opening period and when Whyteleafe went in front after 29 minutes it was no more than the visitors deserved. A ball down the left flank sent the Whyteleafe full back in behind the Angels defence and his cross was met by Atta Gyan who gave Martin no chance.
The Angels only real opportunity of the opening 45 minutes came just prior to the break when Louis Copeland’s cross was headed narrowly wide by Cameron Wootton.
Parkinson made two half-time changes, Toby Henley came on for Josh Ferguson and Hartley replaced Copeland. Henley did well to stifle a winger that had caused first half problems and the Tonbridge defence looked more assured giving midfielders Ben Twist and Luca Woodhouse the opportunity to become more creative.
Hartley had a couple of chances within the space of a minute from the 50th minute but neither shot carried enough power to worry the visiting goalkeeper.
But, after 59 minutes, Woodhouse got free on the left hand side and his cross-cum-shot to the far post found itself nestling in the far corner of the net to the delight of his fellow Academy students who were congregated behind the goal creating a great atmosphere with the beating of the drum.
Whyteleafe rallied from the setback and Martin was called into action making good saves on two occasions to deny the visiting centre forward.
Hartley’s moment of magic arrived on 81 minutes when a long punt forward from Martin was won in the air and nodded on by Wootton into the path of the 15-year-old who deftly chipped his shot over the advancing goalkeeper for a brilliantly composed finish.
The Angels had to survive eight torturous minutes of added time, which in fairness was probably correct as there had been numerous stoppages, before the referee finally brought down the curtain on this highly entertaining encounter that had been watched by a healthy attendance of 234 supporters, starved of football at Longmead.

The FA Cup has thrown up the rather ludicrous scenario that when a so-called Elite team is drawn away from home to a Step 3-7 club then the visiting Elite club are denied any support. Thus was the case with Tonbridge Angels. A few supporters bought tickets online and gained entry and Farnborough did nothing deny these people their place in the ground. Temperature checks taken and the NHS track and trace app was available to check in.

Tunbridge Wells supporters are nestling in their own little corner of heaven at present. Two League wins and FA Cup progress, scoring 10 times without reply in the process and heading up the fledgling SCEFL Premier table. With Covid-19 worries growing by the day, it’s no wonder they can joke about ending the season now!
Another decent attendance of 208 had made their way though the Track and Trace and Temperature protocols and they didn’t have to wait long to see the home team take the lead. Euan Sahadow broke down the left but saw his effort saved by the advancing Bearsted goalkeeper’s legs only for the ball to rebound to Matt Day who passed the ball into the vacant net.
Bearsted settled down after the early setback and created chances for Harrison Hatfull (great name for a striker!) and Jon Rogers, whose second effort was saved by the feet of Tunbridge Wells’ keeper Aaron Lee-Wharton.
The Wells increased their lead on 34 minutes when a free kick from Jordan Wells was met by a near post header from Robbie Bissett.
Bearsted worked hard to find their way back into the game with Joran Ababio denied by a superb saving tackle from Bissett and David Baranonski firing wide.
An injury just before half-time to Baranonski led to a lengthy delay before the referee decided to call time on the first half. The break had nearly been concluded before the injured Bearsted man was stretchered away.
The second half was a strange affair as the game drifted rather aimlessly towards its conclusion before substitute Josh Froggatt scored two late goals to add a flattering scoreline. The first converting from close range after some impressive play from Regan Corke and, four minutes into time added, curling a shot into the bottom corner.

Tonbridge Angels’ Youth team eased their way through their FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round tie at Punjab United.
Shorn of several of the National Under-19 Alliance team by virtue of age, manager Tommy Parkinson gave several first year students their FA Youth Cup debuts and included Fin Hartley on the bench from the Kent Youth League Under-16 squad.
Playing up the Steve Cook Stadium slope, the Angels quickly got into their stride with captain Ben Twist at the centre of much the action, shooting narrowly wide after six minutes and supplying the cross for a Cameron Wotton header to go wide.
Tonbridge’s dominance finally translated to the scoreline after 23 minutes when a clearance found Anthony Gill on the left side, 25 yards out, who placed a lofted shot into the far corner of the net.
The only disappointing point of Tonbridge’s first half performance was that their ascendancy did not produce another goal until the 45th minute. Louis Copeland’s pace saw him into good positions on several occasions but the finishes were frustratingly inches wide of the far post. Wotton brought a good save out of the Punjab goalkeeper with a header from a Twist free kick.
On the stroke of half-time the scoreline took on a truer reflection of the half when a cross was headed back across the face of goal by Alex Thompson for Wotton to head home from close range.
The second half was mostly in the same vein with the Angels creating several good opportunities but unable to add to the scoreline. Luca Woodhouse and Wotton were far too much of a handful for the Punjab back line but a mixture of good goalkeeping and narrow misses kept the score at 2-0.
Tonbridge will now travel to VCD in the First Qualifying Round on a date yet to be arranged.
Parkinson said after the game that he was pleased with the performance given that it was the first time this particular team had played together. They had defended their own box well with first year Chester Smith outstanding.
