Match Report
Another defeat for our second string, but one of the better performances, especially in the first half. First teamers on show were Gary Mulligan, Albert Jarrett and making a first appearance in the Reserves, Rene Steer. Much like last week, none of them really did enough to suggest that they are going to be featuring strongly in the run in. Steer did make one very good run through the midfield in the second half which produced a chance, but the best he can hope for is the place on the bench made vacant by Adam Miller's suspension.
Millwall had three players of first team experience including our old favourite, Danny Spiller, who has had a injury-ridden spell at the Den. Danny looked his old self, plenty of enthusiasm and it was his killer pass that set up the second goal.
A bad defensive error from triallist, Cypriot central defender Valentino Shielis allowed Ashley Grimes a free run on goal for the first and there was a suspicion that Shielis also played Marquis onside for the second. Sadly alongside the excellent Connor Essam, they formed a reasonably good partnership for the most part. Five minutes from time an awful piece defending that was so bad it was comical allowed Ofoche to increase the lead to three.
Gillingham deserved a goal and Millwall thought so as well when Jarrett's cross was turned into his own net by Tefvik in the final minute.
The Easter holiday and a beautiful sunny afternoon produced a healthy crowd and an reasonably entertaining game.

Gillingham's second string were easily disposed of by a much stronger Crystal Palace side. Mark Stimson has mainly used reserve team games to have a look at triallists and youth team players. On this occasion he played two first teamers, Gary Mulligan, not used in recent games and Albert Jarrett, returning from injury. Mulligan, as usual, worked hard leading the line but did little to press his claims for a first team place and although Jarrett showed flashes of pace and ability, it was a bit hit and miss and was eventually substituted with a calf injury that was immediately iced.
One point that I have noticed in reserve team matches that every side that comes to Priestfield seems so much bigger and stronger than Gillingham. Palace looked like a side that came from the land of the giants against our lads.
Luke Rooney looks a good prospect, a bit on the small side, but with a lot of ability and his endeavour matches his more famous namesake.

Good afternoon's entertainment in bright sunshine that left the linesman on the Medway Stand side wearing a cap.
Dennis Oli returned and played well, looking sharp and enthusiastic. He put so much into the first half I was guessing that he was only going to play 45, but he went on to play 75, a good shift put in.
Of the triallists, the Aussie Cahill scored a brilliant free kick and showed a bit more than Micah Hyde, who I thought was "no better than what we've got!". The full back, Joe Howe, presently non-contract at Fisher Athletic, looked better going forward than backwards, but did OK.
Whether any of them a worth a second look, I have my doubts.
Early in the game, QPR cut through the Gills back line with some neat passing and a last gasp challenge from Connor Essam saved a certain scoring chance, but the ball broke to the QPR forwards and from here Alan Julian made two superb stops.
QPR controlled the first half and despite Andy Pugh hitting a post with a header, the West Londoners could have been more than two goals to the good come half time.
But credit to our Ressies as they came back strongly. Following Cahill's strike, Stuart Lewis made a good interception and slotted a pass to Luke Rooney who finished with the composure of his more illustrious namesake.

I like Reserve Team games, you can pretend being a scout or an unemployed manager. Today, amongst our midst was Mickey Adams, Welling manager Andy Ford and quite a few others who I did not recognise judging by the number of men making notes. You also get a first look at the newest bunch of triallists and we saw one making an outstanding case for a contract, Albert Jarrett. Late of Watford and MK Dons, young Albert was a box of tricks with very good spacial awareness. Doubtless the watching representatives from other clubs would have come to the same conclusion, today he played in Gillingham's colours, it would be nice to think he might do so again.
Other triallists were Marcus Haber, a Canadian U21 international recommended by Simeon Jackson, who despite missing a couple of good chances did enough to warrant at least another look in training and a loanee of a previous time, Trevor Benjamin, who despite his goal, looked heavy and slow. We've seen too many of his type recently.
Tyron Amory made up the quartet and probably didn't do enough to warrant further interest.
Southampton had only Rudi Skacel and Nathan Dyer, a real handful, whose names were recognisable. Gillingham matched their Championship counterparts in all but finishing and it made for an entertaining afternoon.
