Staplehurst Monarchs U23 2 Ramsgate U23 2
Match 23/23/2146 - Wednesday, 30th August 2023 - SCEFL Development League
Staplehurst Monarchs U23 (1) 2 Linton 6 Winch 57
Ramsgate U23 (0) 2 Jobe 80 Hennessey 90+12
Attendance: 81
Admission: £2
Programme: None
Mileage: 1/1,181
Weather: 18degC., getting cooler
As the once in a decade Blue Moon rose high over the Jubilee and Staplehurst Monarch’s SCEFL Development League game entered its 102nd minute, one final cross lofted into the box was met with a firm header from close range and visitors Ramsgate had escaped with a point after finding themselves two goals down just before the hour.
This season the Development League has attracted the attention of National League South’s Maidstone United and Isthmian League sides. Consequently, from this first look, the league looks significantly stronger than last season.
In terms of possession, Ramsgate could certainly argue that they were well worth their point but Staplehurst defended resolutely and caught the visitors on the break on countless occasions.
One such break, saw the home side take the lead when the ball was fed to the right hand side of the box from where Ainsley Linton fired into the far bottom corner for a superb finish.
The first half proceeded in much the same vein but it was the home side that came closest to doubling their lead with a headed opportunity going narrowly over.
Staplehurst added to their lead on 57 minutes when Sam Winch headed home from a corner.
Now with a two goal deficit, Ramsgate had to go for broke and the pressure on the Staplehurst goal was relentless but last ditches tackles, a superb save from Cameron Sanghera and a goal line clearance kept the visitors at bay until the 80th minute when the ball dropped in the box for Zak Jobe to poke home.
The home side game managed (the visiting supporters calling something entirely different) the remaining time but Ramsgate were given the encouragement of eight minutes of added time.
An injury midway through this period added further minutes with 11 gone on the clock when one final Hail Mary into the box was met with a header from Wes Hennessey to earn Ramsgate what had seemed an unlikely point.
As arguments raged over the length of the extra time to the added time, two players appeared to be red carded by the referee which was a disappointing end to a highly entertaining evening.

Staplehurst Monarchs U23 3 Tunbridge Wells U23 2
Match 114/22/2121 - Monday, 8th May 2023 - SCEFL Development
Staplehurst Monarchs U23 (0) 2 Cheek 67 (pen) Juniper 80 Ruler 90+1
Tunbridge Wells U23 (2) 2 Lambert 12,34
Attendance: 75
Admission: £2
Mileage: 1/8,032
More end of season eeking and, should I want to (not particularly), the SCEFL Development League has a bevy of unplayed fixtures due to the wet winter and clubs preserving their pitches for their senior teams. Clubs have been given until 19th May to fulfil their fixtures after which the games will be voided.
Tunbridge Wells Under-23's arrived at the Jubilee with just the one substitute, a goalkeeper, and he was pressed into action as an outfield player within the opening minutes as striker Fin Hartley limped out of the game.
Tunbridge Wells made light of their disadvantage going into the break two goals up through a brace from Max Lambert who opened the scoring with a driven shot into the bottom corner after 12 minutes and a stab home from close range after 34 minutes.
Staplehurst, who were also without substitutes, set out the second half with an intent to retrieve the game and rattled the woodwork and had close calls in front of call before they were handed a route back into the game when Max Juniper was brought down for Connor Cheek to convert from the spot. Ten minutes remained when Juniper scrambled the ball over the line after the Wells failed to clear their lines. A really good game deserved a cracking winner and it duly came for the home side in the first minute of added after close range chances had gone begging the ball fell at the feet of Ollie Ruler whose 20 yard shot into the top corner whistled past the keeper.

Staplehurst Monarchs U23 2 Hollands & Blair U23 3
Match 34/22/2041 - Thursday, 20th October 2022 - SCEFL Development League
Staplehurst Monarchs Under-23 (2) 2 Sargeant 16 Morrell 18
Hollands & Blair Under-23 (2) 3 Davies 20 Prudger 35 Hall 62
Headcount: 45
Admission: £2 Senior
Programme: None
Mileage: 1/2,520
My first foray into SCEFL Development League football took me to my local club, to watch Staplehurst Monarchs Under-23’s take on Hollands & Blair. They provided a watchable game, but one which lacked the quality of Isthmian Under-18’s of which I was interested to make compare.
On a chilly evening, where the wrong choice of coat was made, Blair started the brighter with chances falling to the heads of Richard Davies and Oliver Everett and followed, in the ninth minute, with a superb block from Staplehurst's Keaton Courtman to deny Davies, but it was the home side that found themselves two goals ahead by the 18th minute.
After 16 minutes, a cross from the left, found Toby Sargeant with time and space to drive a shot into the bottom corner and two minutes later, the score was doubled when Hollands goalkeeper, Jason Hayward, saved an initial shot but Harry Morrell was on hand to bundle home the rebound.
But the Gillingham-based side quickly hit back and the endeavour of Davies was rewarded when he finished via a post following a surging run from the middle of the pitch.
Blair continued to have the better of the game with Staplehurst goalkeeper, Tom Klegwegt saving from Fred Searle before they got on level terms, after 35 minutes, when a shot from 30 yards by Dallas Prudger could only be helped into the net by Klegwegt.
Staplehurst enjoyed their best period of the half in the closing 10 minutes with James Found narrowly going wide and Hayward saving from Ruben Sammut and Sargeant but half-time parity was a fair reflection.
After four minutes of the second half, a 30 yard shot from Searle cleared the bar but two good chances followed for Staplehurst with a header following a corner being cleared from the line and then another header from Found after a good cross from Morrell also went over the bar.
But, after 62 minutes, some dreadfully naive defending from the home side allowed Hollands & Blair to take the lead. A quick throw-in to George Hall, stood in an offside position, but, of course, you cannot be offside from a throw-in and the Blair winger cut in to bury his chance into the far corner.
A succession of chances should have seen the visitors through to a comfortable last 15 minutes but Hall put a chance wide and Prudger headed into the goalkeeper’s hands.
Staplehurst rallied to try to extract something from the game but Hollands comfortably managed the game to its conclusion.
